Salt-water Lagoons

The lagoon, with less of the ecosystem

This page exists because some clients love the lagoon form but aren't right for the maintenance commitment of a biological build. We mention this option here, plainly, because we'd rather you have the full picture than be sold the wrong thing.

 

A salt-water lagoon looks like its bio-filtered sibling - same white sand, same shoreline, same shape of a tropical shore set into your property. The difference is what holds the water clear, and what the water can and cannot support.

What it is, plainly

A salt-water lagoon uses a salt chlorination system instead of biological filtration. Dissolved salt is converted to a low concentration of chlorine, continuously, by an electrolytic cell. The water reads as clear, stays sanitised, and runs through a much lower-effort maintenance regime than a biological lagoon.

 

This is not a chemical-free build. Salt chlorination generates chlorine. It's gentler than a conventional dosed pool, and most owners find it a meaningful upgrade on what they're used to, but it's not the same as the biological system we use elsewhere across our work. We want to be clear about that, because the rest of our website isn't ambiguous on chemistry, and this page shouldn't be either.

 

What softens the experience meaningfully is what sits alongside the salt chlorination. We run the same UV stage we use on our chemical-free builds, and a sized ozone polish on top of it. The two together do most of the sanitising work - the salt chlorination operates at a much lower set-point than it otherwise would, which is what gives the water its silky feel underfoot. There's no chlorine note in the air around the lagoon, no sting at the eyes, no chemical residue on skin after a swim. The water feels closer to spring water than to pool water.

 

It is, to be clear, still a chlorinated system. It is also a meaningfully better one than what most people will have experienced.

What you get

Substantially lower maintenance. No biological balance to watch, no fish to feed, no aquatic planting to tend. The system is closer to a high-end pool than to a pond, operationally.

 

The same visual. From the surface, a salt-water lagoon and a bio-filtered lagoon look indistinguishable. White sand, crystal water, set rockwork, shoreline planting.

 

Water that doesn't feel like pool water. The UV and ozone stages let the salt chlorination run lower than it otherwise would. The water reads silky, not chemical. No chlorine smell, no sting, no residue.

 

Predictable water. A bio-filtered lagoon takes a season to settle. A salt-water lagoon is usable from soon after commissioning.

 

Lower running cost on staff time. The annual maintenance figure on a salt-water lagoon is lower than on its bio-filtered equivalent, because there's less for a maintenance team to do.

What you give up

No fish. Salt water doesn't support a fish population. If snorkelling with fish was part of the appeal, the salt-water variant isn't the right answer - the bio-filtered lagoon is.

 

Less planting in the water. A salt-water lagoon can carry shoreline planting and edge planting, but the aquatic plants that line a bio-filtered lagoon don't survive in salt water. The water reads cleaner; it reads less alive.

 

The seasons show less. A bio-filtered lagoon looks different in April and August. A salt-water lagoon looks broadly the same year-round. Whether that's a gain or a loss depends on what you wanted from the water.

Who this is right for

Clients who love the lagoon form but live away from the property most of the year. Clients with staff turnover that makes maintaining a biological system unreliable. Resorts and properties where the lagoon needs to perform on day one and every day after, without seasonal variation. Clients who genuinely don't want a fish-bearing ecosystem on the property, but do want the look of one.

 

If you're closer to one of these than to the bio-filtered client, the salt-water variant is the right answer.

Why this isn't on the main site

The Biosphere brand is built around chemical-free water. Every other product we list - Bio Swimming Pools, Bio Swim Ponds, the main Swimming Lagoons page - holds to that. A salt chlorination system doesn't, and we're not going to put it on the main pages of a site that promises otherwise.

 

This page exists as a quiet alternative for clients we've met, whose situation makes the bio-filtered build the wrong recommendation. We'd rather build the right product for you than the brand-aligned one. That's why this page is here, and why you reached it through a link from us rather than from a menu.

How it comes together

The process is identical to the bio-filtered lagoon - Project Assessment, Design, Construction, Establishment - with two differences. The Design stage is shorter because there's no biology to engineer. The Establishment stage is shorter because the system is sanitised from commissioning. We hand over with an annual maintenance contract that's lower in cost and lighter in scope than the bio-filtered equivalent.

  • Because clients we'd otherwise turn away ask for it, and we'd rather offer them an honest alternative than lose the work or build them the wrong product. We don't promote this option. We mention it during the Project Assessment when we think it might fit.

  • No. Salt chlorination produces a low concentration of chlorine - softer than a dosed pool, gentler on skin and eyes than what you'd find at a hotel. It's a meaningful step up from conventional chlorination. It is not, however, the same as the chemical-free water in our main range.

  • No, and this is the part that surprises most owners. We pair the salt chlorination with the same UV stage we use on our chemical-free builds, plus an ozone polish on top. The UV and ozone do most of the sanitising work, which lets the salt chlorination operate at a low set-point - much lower than it otherwise would. The result is water that feels silky on skin, with no chlorine smell, no sting, no residue. It's the same physical sensation people associate with mineral springs or natural pools, not with hotel pools.

  • No. The salt concentration prevents fish from surviving. If fish are something you might want eventually, the bio-filtered lagoon is the right choice from the start.

  • The starting price is the same - Rs 80 Lakhs. Where a specific project lands depends on the same factors: size, rockwork, planting, lighting, site. The difference is most visible in the annual maintenance cost, which is lower.

  • In principle yes, but not easily. The biological system has to be sized and engineered from the start. A retrofit is possible but expensive enough that we'd recommend choosing one or the other at the design stage.
